China imports 1.06 billion tonnes of iron ore in 2018
After decades of posting often huge gains, China’s iron ore imports finally ran out of momentum last year, with the total reaching 1.06 billion tonnes for 2018, lower by 10.2 million tonnes or by 1% on year, according to the latest statistics released by China’s General Administration of Customs on January 14.
Last year’s result also contrasts with that for 2017 when the country’s iron ore imports still maintained solid growth of 5% year-on-year. The most recent yearly retreat happened in 2010 and then only by a tiny 1%, according to the Customs database.
